Libris Interruptus....Books as Inspiration

Books not only entertain us, but sometimes can inspire us to try something we never would have before, or learn something new. What is the craziest/most interesting thing a book has ever inspired you to do, and which book was it? I can't wait to hear your answers!!!

  2. How about in reverse? Back when I was in 4th grade (1991, I think), I was given The Jungle by Sinclair Lewis as an Easter present (of all things). I'd just recently read Animal Farm, and my mother thought I'd enjoy it. Before starting it, my uncle saw that I'd received it, and said he remembered reading the book in high school. He said he couldn't eat meat for a year after reading it. Not having the stomach for what caused this, I didn't read the book—and still haven't, to this day (though I still have it! Maybe someday...).

  3. As an impressionable teen, Michener's "Poland" had me being Polish for a month... more recently "Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt helped me quit my job, go back to school, and become a... teacher!

  4. Ack! So embarrassed! Not Sinclair Lewis: Upton Sinclair. My apologies (and to think: I really liked Babbitt...).
